How To Increase Your Car’s Horsepower Do you want a big beast of a car engine? Most of us want more power and punch when we hit that gas pedal. Some of us crave it like a big piece of juicy steak. Well, unless you’re willing to shell out the big bucks for a 640-hp Lamborghini Murcielago (it’ll cost a bit more than a Toyota Corolla), you’ll need to approach the problem from another direction. Fortunately, there are a few easy steps you can take to boost the horsepower in your car without taking a second mortgage out on your home. Today, I’ll share a few of them with you. Room For Improvement Before we get into the steps to boost your car’s power, it’s important to realize that automakers compromise a lot when they build cars. They need the cars to pass emissions tests while keeping them affordable and reliable. That’s actually good news for you. It means you can upgrade certain components that will provide the extra horsepower you want. Here are a few ideas: Air Filter – Pistons create air resistance that suck power away from your car’s engine. You can reduce the amount of resistance by using a larger air filter. Plus, if you change it out regularly, you can keep it from becoming clogged with dust and other debris. It may not give you an extra 100 hp. But, every little bit helps. Synthetic Oils – They cost a lot more than conventional motor oils, but synthetics can offer an instant performance advantage. They allow your engine to operate more easily in both hot and cold temperatures while reducing a lot of its friction. Because the friction eats away at your engine’s horsepower, eliminating it allows you to put the hp to better use. Lighter Pistons – Heavier pistons make your engine work harder. Think about how they work. They travel back and forth, over and over, as your car barrels down the street. The problem is that they consume a lot of energy whenever they switch directions. That’s a drag on horsepower. If you replace the heavier pistons with lighter ones, they’ll use less energy and free up the extra power. More Compression – This isn’t recommended for every car, so definitely speak with your mechanic about your particular make and model. The higher the compression ratio on your air-and-gas mix, the more power your engine will generate. But, there’s a potential drawback: there’s a point at which the additional compression can cause the air-and-gas blend to ignite. Filling up with higher-octane gas will prevent this, but you should still speak with your mechanic. There you have it. Four ways to give your car a little more power. None of them will turn your Ford Escort into a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, but a little boost here and there adds up.

Motoring Tips

How many times have you seen drivers signaling to turn while simultaneously while making the turn. Of course there are those idiots who just suddenly make a turn without even signaling that they would. The ones whose cars end up in the auto shop and the owner having a hard time filling his auto insurance from a bunch of Auto Insurance Quotes.
The rule of the thumb is to make known your intention to make a turn way before actually making the turn. You can either use your vehicle’s signal lights or do the universal hand signal, which is to extend your left hand to the left before making a left turn or bending the extended left hand by the elbow at forty five degrees with your hand pointing upward for a right turn.
Now, what is very important to remember is that making the signal to turn only relays the message to other drivers of your intention to make a turn and whereto and does not in any way give you the right of way.

For Your Car

There is a humongous and perpetually growing market for used car parts that is supported by millions of car owners. New replacement parts are often expensive and unnecessary. A lot of people opt to save money and buy used parts from a number of convenient sources. Below, we’ll provide you with an overview of 5 places from which you can buy used auto parts at a discount. Swap Meets Swap meets are a great place to find parts because vendors are usually open to negotiating prices. You’ll find some vendors specialize in parts for certain makes or models. Others may only carry a certain type of part. Many of these vendors use swap meets as a way to make a little extra money. Bring cash and they’ll be willing to deal. Junkyards Huge heaps of rotting cars are mostly a thing of the past. Today’s junkyards offer trackable inventories, better organization and increased convenience. Plus, if one salvage yard doesn’t have the part you’re looking for, they can often check the inventories of other junkyards for you. Online Parts Dealers If you’re unable to find the parts you need at local swap meets and junkyards, check online with the hundreds of used parts dealers. Many of them are connected through a network of other dealers. You can submit your parts request through an online form. The request will move through the network and be addressed by the dealer – or dealers – who can offer you the part. If several dealers have the part you need in their inventories, you can select from the lowest prices. Private Parties Many people are more comfortable dealing with individuals. In the past, buying used car parts from private parties meant poring through your local newspaper’s classified ads. But, times have changed. eBay and online forums attract car enthusiasts from around the world. These places have become important marketplaces for replacement parts. Using Caution And Getting A Good Deal Whenever you purchase used car parts, you need to take a few precautions. Some parts may have defects which are practically invisible to the eye. Or, they can be damaged when removed from another vehicle. What’s more, most vendors will not offer refunds if the part doesn’t fit your car properly. Take the part you’re replacing to swap meets and junkyards so that you can compare it with a replacement. If you’re buying it online, be specific about your needs and ask about a return policy. Finally, avoid buying certain parts used. Air bags, fuel lines and piston rings can often be too worn or damaged to be usable (and remember, no refunds). Buying used auto parts is a great way to save time and money. But, approach it cautiously to get the best deal if you really want to feel satisfied in your decision. A Seamless System

The following article has been provided free of charge by Jonathan Phillips of Everdrive.com, which provides used auto parts, Ford parts, and Honda parts. Learning The Basics Of An Ignition System The purpose of your car’s ignition system is to time a spark that ignites gas at the precise moment needed to power your engine. Several different parts work together to make this happen. Your car’s engine is basically a huge pump. Air and gas are pumped in, producing energy that turns the tires and moves the vehicle. That’s an oversimplification, but sufficient for learning how the components of the system work. Below, I’ll briefly describe the parts involved and take you through the process of igniting the gas and powering your engine. Parts And Their Jobs Your ignition system is comprised of spark plugs, a distributor (and cap), rotor, and coil. The coil is what transforms an electrical current from your car battery into a spark. When the coil successfully creates a spark (and it needs to be potent enough to actually ignite the fuel), the spark is transferred to your car’s distributor. The reason it’s called a distributor is because it spins and allocates the sparks from the coil to multiple spark plugs. It does that through the rotor. The rotor spins with the distributor and contacts the cylinders of the engine. When it does this, it transfers the sparks to the spark plug wires. At this point, the spark has nearly traveled to where it needs to be. Each of the spark plug wires is attached to the distributor cap through its own contact point. Those wires send the spark directly to the spark plugs which are mounted in your car’s cylinder head. When the gases from the fuel flow into the cylinder, the spark ignites them, causing combustion. The process I’ve just described happens over and over, tens of thousands of times while your car is in operation. A Seamless System Your ignition system is most effective when the sparks are precisely timed. In the past, this was done by employing a points-and-condenser module to tell the distributor when to allocate the sparks to the spark plugs. Today, most cars are equipped with computers (called ignition modules) that control the timing. They do so by notifying your car’s engine control unit about the placement of the pistons. If an ignition module fails, it’s usually necessary to replace it. Over the past few years, manufacturers have begun experimenting with “distributorless” ignition systems. Rather than a single coil creating the sparks needed to ignite the fuel, each spark plug has its own coil. That effectively eliminates the need for the distributor. It’s still considered a young technology, but holds significant promise.

Rebuilt, Remanufactured & Used Car Parts in Detail

Posted by admin in Cars on 13-10-2008

Auto repairs usually come at the worst time and always carry a cost that we’d rather avoid. When major parts in your vehicle need to be replaced, that cost can be significant. For example, if your car’s transmission fails, it can cost $1,500 or more for a new one. The repair shop to which you’ve taken your car will give you three options: a rebuilt transmission, a remanufactured unit, or a used transmission. In this article, we’ll help you understand what each of these terms involves. What Does Rebuilt Mean? Major car parts like transmissions are usually comprised of several smaller parts. If your transmission fails, it may be due to the failing of one or more of the smaller parts while other components are working properly. For example, the pistons and actuator band may need to be replaced, but the other parts are fine. A rebuilt transmission would involve replacing only the pistons and actuator band. Rebuilt parts are usually less costly than remanufactured parts. What Does Remanufactured Mean? When the O.E.M. (Original Equipment Manufacturer) releases a car part, it is expected to meet certain standards of quality and performance tolerance. Over time, the quality and performance of parts degrade. When a part is remanufactured, it is completely overhauled in order to ensure that it once again meets the O.E.M. standards. Continuing our example from above, a remanufactured transmission will have undergone an exhaustive review that checks every component. This can include the pistons, actuator band, the entire planetary gearset and clutch plates. Everything is restored and tested. Because remanufactured parts are held to O.E.M. standards, they will often come with a comparatively long warranty. That being said, they are usually more expensive than rebuilt parts. Used Car Parts Used car parts are the least costly of the three options. They also require the most caution when purchasing them. The reason is due to the fact that few used auto parts come with a warranty that extends past a year. If the part fails after a year has passed, you’ll have no recourse. However, savvy car owners can find remarkable deals in used parts. By asking the right questions and knowing what to look for, they can often pay as little as 50% of what an equivalent new or remanufactured part would cost. The decision of which type of part – rebuilt, remanufactured, or used – to invest in will depend largely on your budget and how long you intend to keep your vehicle. After all, if you plan to sell your car in six months, a rebuilt transmission is probably a better investment than one that is remanufactured. Choosing appropriately means knowing your goals, your plans for the vehicle and how much you can afford to spend.
